Vision
Our vision at Grace Seattle is:
Because of the power of the Gospel,
in and through our lives
the city of Seattle
will begin to look
more and more like
” the City of God.”

What does this look like?

Values
Jesus tells us that we are not only to pursue his kingdom, but also to live it. We are not only to enter it, but also to extend its influence. Grace Seattle seeks to do these things driven not by a need for God’s approval or attention, but by values derived from the Gospel. Those values can be found here.

Mission
As we grow, Grace Seattle hopes to live out our church’s vision in three “missions chapters.” Read about them here.

Affiliation
Grace Seattle is part of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), a denomination which subscribes to the Westminster Confession of Faith as its statement of faith, and is committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as taught in the Bible, which is the inerrant Word of God. You can find more information about the PCA at their website.

Grace Seattle meets each Sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 am for worship in the facilities of Volunteer Park Seventh-day Adventist church (1300 E Aloha St in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle).

ENCS is a diverse and dynamic church with people of all ages and backgrounds. Whoever you are and whatever your needs, we aim to be a church family that will accept and encourage you to become the person God created you to be.

Through our energetic praise and worship and relevant presentations of the gospel, we’re confident you’ll walk away from ENCS feeling encouraged and blessed. We desire to see you growing in your relationship with God and fulfilling your God-given purpose in life.

ENCS is a life-giving, Bible-centered, Spirit-filled church. We want everyone who walks through our doors to be empowered to impact the world for Christ. As such, we are a community of people committed to Encountering God, Authentic Relationships, Helping People Follow Jesus, and living Kingdom-Focused lives.

Encountering God
Because God is the very reason why we exist, and the most wonderful Being we could ever know, we long for every person to experience a growing relationship with Him. We can encounter Him through worship, prayer, His Word (the Bible), preaching, communion, and many other means. We are committed to pursuing Him in our individual lives and together as a community.

Authentic Relationships
Because relationships are both the ends and means of God’s purposes on the earth, we value genuine relationships based on God’s love. We long for every person to enjoy the fulfillment and security that comes from being loved and accepted right where they are. So we encourage participation in gatherings like our discussion groups and Sunday services, as well as other informal gatherings where people can “do life” together, and cultivate meaningful relationships.

Helping People Follow Jesus
Life is a journey, not a destination. You and I were made for a dynamic relationship with God which only comes through following His Son, Jesus Christ. We are a community of Followers of Jesus who long to help others respond to Jesus’ call of “Follow Me,” and together with them, to be on the journey as fully-developing followers of Christ.

Kingdom-Focused Lives
Jesus taught us to pray, “Your [God's] will be done,” not, “my will be done.” We long to be a community of individuals who orient our lives around what is most important: serving those in need, making wrong things right, using our gifts and talents for the good of others, and in doing so, seeing local and global transformation take place. Jesus said to “go make disciples…”; so whether it is walking across the room, or flying across the globe, we want to be on mission with God, making the world a better place by meeting people’s needs: spiritually, relationally, materially, holistically.

When I awoke from my long dark slumber…
All I could see was Blue Sky!

Finding God is like this! Much of the time it feels as if we are covered by a thick, dark sleep of daily life…we can’t see where we’re going, and finding God feels unrealistic.

The grind of life rules! Covered in heavy clouds, it’s difficult to believe that the sun might ever shine on us again.

Then there’s Blue Sky…
A break in the clouds…
New Life…
Resurrection…
Jesus!

We find what is real…or what is Real finds us…Jesus finds us! We named the church Blue Sky because this is life with Jesus. We can finally see and breathe and love and live.

There’s Blue Sky!
Blue Sky Church started with a team of 50 people moving to the Seattle area from Illinois to plant the new church during the summer of 2004, with our first Sunday services beginning that October.

Steve Morgan, our lead pastor, had planted Vine Community Church in Carbondale, Illinois in 1995, which had grown to be a large church. While at a conference in 2003, Steve felt God’s leading to “do it again,” specifically feeling God’s direction to plant in the Seattle area. So Steve, his family, and the team relocated and made Seattle home. Blue Sky Church has grown into a vibrant church made up of people from all around the area.

Our desire is to be one of the Seattle churches where people can come in and learn about Jesus in a way that is meaningful to their lives. We are a multi-ethnic church of students and professionals, married and single, old and young, children and youth. Our services are casual with great music, relevant teaching from the Bible, and a fun children’s program.

We’re a non-denominational church located in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. We value community, so you’ll find a warm environment here where it’s easy to get to know people. We value the Bible, so you’ll find weekly sermons that are engaging, relevant, sound, and practical. We also value the Spirit, so you’ll find a place that is filled with life, as we expect God to do the things that seem impossible.

We feel this balance of Word + Spirit + Community defines us well, and it shows in the people who make up our church. Some from traditional denominations, some from a more charismatic style of worship, and some from no church background at all. We all come together for the purpose of pursuing Christ. We hope you’ll join us.

A Friendly Environment:
The first thing you can expect is a warm welcome. As you approach the church, you’ll be met by a greeter who will help you find your way around, answer any questions you might have, and will help make you and your family feel comfortable during the service.

A Relevant Message:
We believe in presenting the incredible message of the gospel in a way that is engaging, practical and challenging. You’ll be able to apply what you learn in a real way every week. We work hard to present an uncompromised view of scripture while maintaining the compassion and love of Jesus Christ.

Bring The Kids:
Westside has a program called Kingdom Kids designed especially for children (age 0-12). We have a great staff who make the services for them fun and exciting. Through the use of video, songs, stories, and crafts, your children will learn important Bible lessons while having a good time.

Wear What You Want:
There are no dress codes here. Just be yourself. You’ll fit in with whatever you feel is comfortable.

Leave Your Checkbook at Home:
We don’t expect you to give anything. The church is supported by its members who call it home, and you can expect that no one will try to pressure to make a contribution.
At Christian Faith Center, our ongoing vision is to Pastor the Northwest, Teach the Nation, and Inspire the World, and part of our vision for growth is reflected in the continued expansion of our facilities. The rapid growth of our church over the last 25 years has given us the enviable problem of having to accommodate the number of people attending our church and schools.

History of Christian Faith Center
In their last two years of Bible College, Casey and Wendy Treat began to sense the call of God on their lives to plant a church. On January 6, 1980, Casey and Wendy founded Christian Faith Center and began pastoring a group of 30. They were ordained in July 1980 by Dr. Fred Price at Crenshaw Christian Center in Los Angeles, California.

In 1984, Casey and Wendy founded Christian Faith School (for pre-school through 12th grade), and later Vision College .

With the first annual Vision Spiritual Life Conference in 1985, Casey and Wendy launched Vision Ministry Fellowship . This organization provides support for men and women in leadership who want to grow and more fully develop themselves and their ministries through teaching, mentoring, and relationship building. Casey and Wendy Treat have been instrumental in helping to plant and support numerous churches through this ministry. CFC North in Everett Washington was launched in July 2003.

You must be born again and filled with the Holy Spirit to have the life God has planned for you.

You must be planted in a local church to have God’s abundant life.

Through renewing of the mind, your life is transformed to do God’s perfect will.

Christian Faith International is committed to influencing the world through media and mission outreach ministries.

Christian Faith International is committed to educating young leaders for our future.

We will change our world as we invite people into our life, our church, and a relationship with God.

We’re sincerely glad you’re exploring our church community and ministry. Quest is far from a perfect church; it is a church that has not arrived. Rather, it is an emerging church.
We are all on a ‘quest’ -”doubting and believing, loving and leaving, struggling and growing” and seeking God both in our beauty and depravity.

Our ethos is not about coercing you into a connection with God or the Quest community but about honest conversations concerning our relationship with God, neighbors, city, and our global community.

If you haven’t done so already, we want to encourage you to visit our faith community. You can also capture a glimpse of our blemished and beautiful community through videos we’ve created. You can also see our review of 2008 our hopes for the year to come in our 2009 Annual Meeting Packet.

If you have any questions or would like for us to follow-up on your interest, feel free to use the form at the bottom to contact us. We look forward to the journey ahead…

The church was an outreach of Bible Temple in Portland, Oregon (now City Bible Church) under the apostolic oversight of Pastor Dick Iverson. Wendell and Gini Smith were on staff at Bible Temple for twenty years as Youth Pastors and associates. They were also involved in international ministry as speakers, authors and ministers.

Pastor Wendell became known for the “DragonSlayer” New Generation youth seminars held across America from 1986 to 1992. Pastor Wendell graduated in 1972 from Northwest Nazarene College (now University), where he and Gini met, and where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Religion.

The pastors and members of The City Church have a confident vision of faith for compassionately impacting the immediate community, the greater Seattle area, the northwest United States and other nations as the Holy Spirit directs. Ministry to nations has continued to increase with specific involvement in more than seven nations. The pastors believe every year will bring an unfolding expression of a city within a city, a vision that includes youth and children’s outreaches, food and clothing distribution, ministry to the needy, facilities for compassionate care, training, education, recreation, shopping and more with daily ministry to people in need from all walks of life.

The City Church of Seattle is a diverse congregation representing people from a variety of backgrounds, nations, races and ages. The City Church is an autonomous, self-governing local church established on the pattern of the New Testament early church. Using the Book of Acts as a blueprint, the church is structured with local ordained elders as well as apostolic relationship with other Christian leaders outside of the congregation. The church is affiliated with Minister’s Fellowship International of Portland, Oregon, where Pastor Wendell serves on the Apostolic Board with Pastor Dick Iverson and Pastor Frank Damazio, helping to provide fellowship, training and accountability for pastors and church leaders worldwide.

The City Church is known for its spirit of worship, prophetic preaching, generosity, faith in the goodness of God and warm Christian love. The City Church began planting new churches in 1998 and continues with a vision that encompasses the metro region of Seattle, the nation’s Capital in Washington DC, and other states in the USA and in cities and villages around the world as the Lord leads.

Our mission is to glorify God in Seattle by making disciples of Jesus Christ who passionately love God, one another and our neighbors.

We will accomplish our mission by:
•    Intentionally calling people into relationship with Jesus Christ;
•    Faithfully growing disciples into spiritual maturity;
• Strategically sending member-ministers to witness in our city and world.

Our Covenant
What is the Biblical meaning of covenant?
In Biblical terms, a covenant is a promise that God makes to which we agree, which becomes our promise to God and one another. It refers primarily to the promise of a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ, if we agree to receive him as Savior and follow him as Lord. When we do that together, we fulfill thecovenant, which is to love God and one another, to be a people who are blessed by God, and a blessing to the world. That is God’s dream for us.

What is the purpose of our covenant?
Our covenant invites us to practice some basic Biblical disciplines through which God delivers the dream. It’s happened before: When God’s people returned from exile, they made a “firm covenant in writing” to “observe and do all the commandments” of the Lord… (Nehemiah 9-10). The people signed it, to say to one another, “You can count on me; we’re in this together.” It helped to solidify and unify their community, to take a significant step toward fulfilling their dream. That is the purpose of our covenant.

How do we fulfill the covenant?
The covenant invites us to practice four basic disciplines together: Worship, Grow, Serve and Give. To find out ways to practice in these disciplines, click on the bolded words in “Our Covenant 2009” below, or go to the “Getting Involved” tab on the Homepage Menu.

How do we make the covenant commitment?
Each year we participate in a covenant renewal as a congregation, when we sign our covenant cards and offer them as an act of worship. The most recent covenant renewal service was Sunday February 22, 2009. If you missed that service and want to become part of our covenant community, you can make that commitment any time. Covenant cards are available in the Chapel and Church office. If you are ready to make this commitment, we encourage you to speak with one of the pastors before signing and offering your card during an upcoming worship service.

Our Vision
We see Seattle First Presbyterian Church becoming a community of disciples who passionately love God, one another and our neighbors.

Through these loving relationships, the Holy Spirit will transform our lives, community, city and world.

As one body united in Jesus Christ, this transforming community will reflect the social, economic, cultural, generational, and geographical diversity of the center city and greater Seattle.

A colorful mosaic of people will prayerfully and creatively shape and reshape the worship and work of the church in theologically faithful and culturally relevant ways.

All members will be missionaries, equipped for ministries for which God has gifted us, and sent to share the Gospel in word and action both locally and globally, including unreached peoples.

Guided by the Spirit, SFPC members and ministries will meet needs unique to the urban environment by engaging people, structures and systems for the sake of Christ. The congregation will gather in the marketplace of a multi-purpose facility uniquely designed to foster community and service to the surrounding neighborhoods.

SFPC will seek to become a model for other center-city churches, one that equips others for urban ministry for the 21st century.

Our Values
• Reformed Theology: We value learning and teaching theology that is Biblical, Evangelical, and Reformed.
• Cultural Relevance: We value “reformed and always reforming” approaches to worship and witness that are relevant to our urban context and surrounding cultures.
• Corporate Worship: We value gathering together weekly in Spirit-inspired corporate worship that employs an eclectic mix of language and form to glorify God.
• Caring Community: We value creating a covenant community in which participants deeply know, love and care for one another in mutually accountable relationships.
• Faithful Discipleship: We value practicing Christian spiritual disciplines through which God transforms us and equips us to follow Christ in every area of our life.
• Unified Diversity: We value developing a unified body that consists of, and ministers to, the diversity of people who live and work in the city center and greater Seattle.
• Member Ministry: We value supporting ministries that emerge from, and are sustained by, the God-given passions and gifts of members of the congregation.
• Equipping Leaders: We value developing leaders and staff whose role is to cultivate and coach member-led ministries.
• Numerical Growth: We value numerical growth and church planting, believing that a healthy church is a growing church, and a growing church is a healthy church.
• Unreached Peoples: We value expanding our ministry from Seattle, the U.S.A. and beyond, and prioritizing unreached peoples in our global missions.
• Joyful Stewardship: We value cultivating joyful and generous stewardship of our time, talent and treasure, including the tithe to God of our gross income.
• Financial Accountability: We value building an operating budget upon tithes and offerings, and investing those resources in ministries that fulfill the vision.

Our History
Seattle First is an old church experiencing a new beginning.

SFPC was organized in 1869 by a pastor who came by wagon train and canoe, and started with seven people. By 1940 it had grown to 8000 members, the largest Presbyterian Church in the world. The congregation was active in the city, sharing the Gospel, planting churches, shaping public policy and higher education, advocating for the poor and outcast, and founding Harborview Hospital and Union Gospel Mission which still care for our city today. While there was much to celebrate, like many churches, Seattle First membership and ministry steadily declined over many decades. By the turn of the century, it became clear that a new direction was needed. Church leadership began seeking God for guidance, with many friends of the congregation providing support and prayer. Their faithful efforts laid the foundation for the future.

Joined by new pastors, in 2006, church leadership began charting a new course, guided by our “Mission, Vision, Values.” We desire to be a community of faith not just in the city but of the city, reflecting the colorful mosaic of cultures, ethnicities and economies of the urban core and greater Seattle. Like Seattle First of the past, we are called to engage the city and the world, inviting people into relationship with Christ and serving those in need as God leads and equips us.

We are a community of faith united in exploring what it means to follow the way of Jesus Christ, to be a people of God and to love and care for our neighbors. As a Church we will know no circles of exclusion, no boundaries we will not cross and no loyalties above those which we owe to God.

About us
The founders of our church, the Holgate and Hanford families, were among the very first pioneers to settle in Puget Sound. Our church is one of the oldest in Seattle. We are an American Baptist Church USA, a member of the Evergreen Association of American Baptist Churches and a Welcoming and Affirming congregation.

We are proud of our historic Baptist Liberties which prize soul liberty, freedom of conscience, autonomy of the local church, religious liberty, and priestly liberty. Our members enjoy being among all faith seekers. Not only is the spiritual journey encouraged, it is supported with retreats and spiritual direction, and is of strength to all in our congregation. As a progressive American Baptist church, we are a healing bridge for those whose experience with fundamentalism has been painful. We are a welcoming and affirming congregation: sexual and gender minorities are naturally integrated into our congregation. We affirm the role of women and men as mutual partners; we act on gender issues. We affirm both the vitality of nuclear families which come in many colors and the intergenerational church community which supports interdependence and sharing. Our children participate in worship and have lessons and opportunities of their own with dedicated mentors.

We are an historic Peace Church where pastors and congregation have stood for peace and against war throughout the twentieth century and to the present. Justice and compassion are trademarks. Throughout our history, pastors and members have taken courageous and often controversial stands on behalf of those marginalized by our society. We strive for excellence in worship, and insightful and progressive interpretation of scripture. We offer opportunities for volunteers to sing in a large choir and play a wide range of instruments, centered on the historic Æolian-Skinner Organ Opus 1216 crafted by G. Donald Harrison, installed here the summer of 2007.

Our Mission

Mars Hill Church lives for Jesus as a city within the city—knowing culture, loving people, and seeing lives transformed to live for Jesus.

Not Just a Building

Mars Hill Church is a group of people who Jesus has saved and sent to be missionaries. We come together as one giant family to worship Jesus in many locations at many times. You can expect a time of prayer and singing to God as well as biblical preaching every Sunday.

Multisite

We meet in multiple locations at multiple times on Sundays. Using satellite and internet technology we have most sermons broadcast to our different locations, other Sundays campus pastors will preach live at every campus. This method of meeting allows the people Mars Hill to grow in numbers and faith while staying in their own communities, being missionaries for Jesus there.

Community Groups

During the week we meet in smaller groups in people’s homes through out the whole city. As we grow larger these close knit groups become more important to individual growth and building a healthy community. There are kiosks at every campus where you can find the group that fits you best.

Below is the original Mars Hill Statement of Faith. Additionally, you can reference the Gospel Coalition Confessional Statement for further detail of our beliefs. For more details you can watch the sermon series Doctrine for a more in depth look at our beliefs.

the Scriptures

We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the verbally inspired word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original writings, infallible, and God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:20, 21; Matthew 5:18; John 16:12, 13).

the Godhead

We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—co-eter¬nal in being, co-eternal in nature, co-equal in power and glory, having the same attributes and perfec¬tions (Deuteronomy 6:4; 2 Corinthians 13:14)

the Person and Work of Christ

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man (John 1:1–2, 14; Luke 1:35). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished ¬our redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice, and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead (Romans 3:24; 1 Peter 2:24; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:3–5). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry as Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Acts 1:9, 10; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 9:24; Romans 8:34; 1 John 2:1–2). We believe Jesus is coming again to judge the living and the dead (1 Peter 4:5; Romans 14:9; 2 Timothy 4:1).

the Person and Work of The Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; He is the Supernatural Agent in regenera¬tion, baptizing all believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemp¬tion (John 16:8–11; 2 Corinthians 3:6; 1 Corinthians 12:12–14; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 5:18).

the Total Depravity of Man

We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam’s sin the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; man is totally depraved and of himself utterly unable to remedy his lost condition (Genesis 1:26, 27; Romans 3:22, 23; 5:12; Ephesians 2:1–3, 12).

Salvation

We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins (Ephesians 2:8–10; John 1:12; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18–19).

Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers

We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God’s power and are thus secure in Christ forever (John 6:37–40; 10:27–30; Romans 8:1, 38, 39; 1 Corinthians 1:4–8; 1 Peter 1:5). We believe that it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God’s Word, which clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion for the flesh (Romans 13:13, 14; Galatians 5:13; Titus 2:11–15).

the Ministry and Spiritual Gifts

We believe that God is sovereign in the bestowing of spiritual gifts. It is, however, the believer’s responsi¬bility to attempt to develop their sovereignly given spiritual gift(s). The baptism of the Holy Spirit occurs at conversion and is the placing of the believer into the Body of Christ. We also believe that particular spiritual gift(s) are neither essential, nor prove the presence of the Holy Spirit, nor are an indication of deep spiritual experience (1 Corinthians 12:7, 11, 13; Ephesians 4:7–8). We believe that God does hear and answer the prayer of faith, in accordance with His own will, for the sick and afflicted (John 15:7; 1 John 5:14, 15). We believe that it is the privilege and responsibility of every believer to minister according to the gift(s) and grace of God that is given to him (Romans 12:1–8; 1 Corinthians 13; 1 Peter 4:10–11).

the Church

We believe that the church, which is the body and espoused bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism made up of all born-again persons (Ephesians 1:22, 23; 5:25–27; 1 Corinthians 12:12–14; 2 Corinthians 11:2). We believe that the establishment and continuance of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament Scriptures (Acts 14:27; 18:22; 20:17; 1 Timothy 3:1–3; Titus 1:5–11). We believe in the autonomy of the local churches, free of any external authority and control (Acts 13:1–4; 15:19–31; 20:28; Romans 16:1,4; 1 Corinthians 3:9, 16; 1 Corinthians 5:4–7, 13; 1 Peter 5:1–4). We recognize believer’s baptism and the Lord’s supper as scriptural means of testimony for the church (Matthew 28:19, 20; Acts 2:41, 42; Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26).
